The Contraption Challenges make a bold return for LittleBigPlanet 2, with a new challenge to build a working Submarine. It may sound simple, but if you dare pit yourself against the hardened contraption creators, you will be up for a real challenge!

This is the first Contraption Challenge since the Launch of LittleBigPlanet 2, the previous ones all being in the first game,so we expect some interesting things to say the least!

We’re starting fairly simple and asking you to make a contraption that can swim underwater. It doesn’t have to look like a “typical” submarine; it could be a robotic shark, an underwater car, even a scuba diving rocket cheetah – as long as it swims underwater, the more creative it is the better! Here are the requirements:

• Sackboy has to be able to enter and exit the contraption out of the water.
• Sackboy must control it from within the driver’s seat – no remote control.
• It needs to be able to travel in all directions underwater.
• It should behave differently when not underwater. This could simply just be making it float on the surface so that it isn’t able to continue swimming in the air (which would look a bit weird).
• Nothing else is required. Torpedoes etc. can be added, but it’s not what we’re asking for, so we’d rather you focus on making the swimming fun and interesting.

This post is somewhat overdue, but it’s time to talk about the tragic events that have been unfolding in Japan recently. There’s perhaps no need to go into too much detail, we all know about the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that has caused immense devastation, and loss of life there, we all know they face a very tough time ahead, and can do with all the help they can get.

The games industry obviously has special ties with Japan. These people are our colleagues, friends, family, team mates, opponents, compadres, buddies… you’ve played their LittleBigPlanet levels, and they’ve played yours. That’s why people from within the games industry have come together to build the Play For Japan campaign.

Play For Japan aims to channel the passion and generosity of gamers into a relief effort, through events, donations, and auctions of rare and interesting gaming memorabilia. That’s where we will be joining in, with five auctions we hope will raise some much needed cash for those in need. All the money raised will be donated to the Red Cross Appeal.

We have framed four pieces of artwork by Francis, the chief creator of Sackboy. They show some ideas for the development of our beloved hessian chum, and if we may be so bold, each one is a piece of gaming history. In the words of Indiana Jones, they belong in a museum! There are four of these pieces of artwork, each one is different, and as they are the originals, they unique.

Each framed sketch comes with a very special copy of LittleBigPlanet comes with a special uber rare ‘Mm Special edition’ box art slip that has been signed by the whole team here at Media Molecule. (One of them has even been signed twice by me, double value, not at all a mistake!) There are only a very, very small number of these custom covers in existence, they were originally intended to be owned only by Media Molecule staff.

We are very proud to present to you the preview trailer for Hansel & Gretelbot, a very special community project based loosely on an old fairy tale, and that’s nearly ready for you to play!

Hansel & Gretelbot is the creation of 12 community members, names you may well recognise: Wexfordian, Comphermc, Morgana25, rtm223, Hilightnotes, xkappax, Catiers, GruntosUK, CENTURION24, Jaeyden, Cuzfeeshe and steve_big_guns.

A few months ago the Community Molecule set them a challenge – could they create a full game experience? Their own complete LBP Theme, using the new LBP2 tools to develop all original story, mini-games, bosses, cutscenes, music, and voices.

The team was gathered, designs were drawn up, themes were picked and building began, now several months later they are very nearly ready to launch their project for you to play!

Once upon a time, in a little cottage on the edge of the Dark Western woods, lived a humble Woodsman, his wife, their son Hansel and robotic daughter Gretelbot. One sad day, the Woodsman’s wife was taken ill, and passed away not too long afterwards. Time passed, but eventually the Woodsman became stricken by loneliness, and he remarried.

The Woodsman’s new wife was a wicked woman, who hated her new step children. They were the reason, so she said, that they had to live in such poverty. They would eat them out of house and home, the Woodsman must get rid of them! His will weakened by his heartbreak, the Woodsman relented, and led Hansel and Gretelbot into the Dark Western Woods, leaving them to fend for themselves, with no idea how to get home…

This Wiki, much like LittleBigPlanet itself, is community-driven and will continue to expand and evolve thanks to the contributions of none other than yourselves, the LittleBigPlanet community.

We’ve been working hard on setting up the basic style and framework and getting started on oh so many great articles, however it’s now down to you guys to help us fill in the gaps!

The awesome LittleBigPlanet fan community is filled with helpful, friendly and creative folk. But it’s also pretty darn huge, and spread out across the world and the web – so if you want to dip your toe in, it can be hard to know where to start. That’s where the brand new ‘LittleBigMap’ comes in…

The LittleBigMap collates together LBP discussions and content from across the web, and plots some of the latest and best videos, pics and tweets on a handy and familiar map interface. So, at a glance you can see that thousands of people are contributing to the LBP community from all over the world – and then you can zoom in, navigate around and take a look at some of the content they’re sharing. There are some nice photos in Hawaii, for starters. :)

The extra cool thing is – the LittleBigMap notices when LBP.me URLs are included in video descriptions, screenshots and tweets, and automatically pulls in stats and information about that level. It’s another way of discovering the most fun and creative levels that people are talking about around the world, and it’ll grow as more of you start to make use of LBP.me URLs around the web. If you already play LittleBigPlanet you can sign in right now and see your own page. You’ll want to change your privacy settings though (see below).

Once logged in you’ll see your recent activity feed, showing all the things your friends and hearted creators have been up to. You’ll also find whole load of features to play with that will help you discover loads of new levels and games, as you browse through millions of creations, adding the interesting ones to your in-game queue as you go.

Play around with the settings and filters and customise your feed and pages to be just how you want them. You can even use our widget wizard to build yourself a customised widget for your blog or forum signature, etc. Have a look around!

Privacy settings

Because LBP.me takes data straight from the game and puts it on the web, we’ve added some privacy settings so you can control what information is shared.

We’ve defaulted this to be in the super strength maximum security mode, and so to see anything cool on the web, you will need to change your preferences. You can do this in-game or straight from the web! Check out this FAQ item for more information.

The LBP PSP community is thriving, with strong communication and support between creators; we’re on our seventh community competition, with creators running each one very professionally, as well as coming up with cool ideas for themes; and collaborations like the mighty ‘Kindred’ and the ’12 Days of Christmas’ have taken us by surprise with their remarkable dedication and organisation. Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves contains a brand new 10 level theme – a dinosaur dominated land where the Evil Big Rex is king. You are on a mission to take on challenges engineered by Terrance Dactyl – and you’re going to need help. So put on your bear skins and grab up to four mates to navigate the tricky terrain of tropical jungle and erupting volcanoes – the player with the PlayStation Move controller leads the way, flicking switches and triggering platforms to help the others, using DualShock Controllers, through each level. Leap between Dino heads, use the Move controller to blast aside crates of bubbles, ride dinosaurs through prehistoric cities and take to the heights of the prehistoric tree canopy – then team up to defeat Big Rex, all whilst collecting Trophies along the way.

Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves is completely standalone – it doesn’t require either LBP 1 or LBP 2 to run. What you will need is one PlayStation Move controller, and at least one friend with a DualShock Controller – it is a Move Required and multiplayer-only co-op experience.

The game will be included on the LittleBigPlanet 2 disc when it is released in January. But for everyone who’s desperate to have some motion controlled fun with Sackboy before then – and for the new PS3 and Move owners out there who are intrigued to find out who this Sackboy fellow is – Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves will be released on PlayStation Store on 15th December, priced €5.99.

That’s not all though! A week earlier, on 8th December, all PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves for free! And, as an extra “thank you” to the amazing community, thousands more LittleBigPlanet fans will receive an email to download Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves for free at the same time. Listen out for more news on this nearer the time.
